Too many of our human stories are still collecting dust on the shelves of our collections at home. Those stories are going to be placed. Those stories are going to be pinned to a physical location so that maybe one day in 20 years our children will go to Ocean Beach in San Francisco, and their little magical thing will start to vibrate and say, ‘This is where your parents first kissed.’

FACEBOOK LAUNCHES FACEBOOK PLACES. THEIR ANGLE: "STORYTELLING".

On the evening of August 18th, Facebook launched its new geo tagging service, Facebook Places.

This "check-in" service is a cheap facsimile of what Foursquare, Gowalla and others have already done. However, with its ocean of users (500 million to date, compared to current leader Foursquare), Facebook is bringing geopositioning to the masses.

We could dwell on the business approach behind Facebook's launch of a service that is very similar to those of other providers (In fact, Facebook attempted to buy Foursquare a short while ago), but really, their sales pitch is what I want to address here.

During the unveiling, Christopher Cox, VP product, emphasized the potential of collective memory instead of the instantaneous aspect of this type of service. While all the others focus on "what your friends are doing right then and there", Facebook is presenting its Places as the service that will tell you a story. Now, that's some nice storytelling placement in a product presentation.

Here's how storytelling sets one product apart, as told by Cox.

Too many of our human stories are still collecting dust on the shelves of our collections at home. Those stories are going to be placed. Those stories are going to be pinned to a physical location so that maybe one day in 20 years our children will go to Ocean Beach in San Francisco, and their little magical thing will start to vibrate and say, 'This is where your parents first kissed.'

We immediately get a different feeling, the story seems to relate to our values, our memories. That's much stronger than "Come see where your friends are at!!" (willful use of the double exclamation mark).

In advertising, telling a story can make the difference in how we perceive a product and a brand. We pound it over and over again, but here we have a great example.

Will Facebook Places hit the target? We'll see. Is it a perfect product, free of any privacy issues? Certainly not. But that's for another post.

NuCaptcha: unintelligible words now on video

First off, what's a Captcha?

A Captcha is a type of test designed to tell man (aka user) from machine (i.e. computer). You no doubt had the opportunity to see such an image composed of scrambled letters on an Internet subscription form. They're usually painstakingly hard to decipher.

Recently, a new Captcha system, cleverly named NuCaptcha, has made its appearance. The concept remains the same, but a Flash video with scrolling text replaces the incomprehensible words in a picture. Needless to say the benefits are numerous, security- and visual-wise.

Halifax airport is using Google Translate... or even worse.

One of Toast's friends mailed us this today.

The picture is on the Halifax airport website (click on it, below "Terminal Map" or right here). For starters, this isn't a small regional airfield, so it's not just a minuscule infrastructure.

Its bilingual content seems to be decent until you start to read it, that is:

"BACK button" is translated by "Bouton de DOS" (meaning button for the BACK, as in body part)

"CLOSE" becomes "ÉTROITE" (narrow?)

"Rollover icon for definition" is transformed into "L'icône de refinancement pour la définition" (the refinancing icon for the definition!)

"Wireless internet" is "Internet mobile"

These are just a few examples.

With the RCMP's latest mishaps in BC, Google Translate is sure getting a bad rep!

When advising project teams frustrated by their seeming inability to deliver promised innovation or creativity to key customers, one provocative recommendation almost always produces positive results: Cut whatever’s left of the budget by 15%. Innovate with that.

Despite an embarrassing wealth of anecdotal data and econometric surveys, little positive correlation exists between R&D spend and successful innovation outcomes. That’s why I can’t help but laugh when mainstream business media whine that companies in this sector-and-that “don’t spend enough on R&D.”

The point and purpose of the 15% provocation is to remind people that human capital always matters more than financial capital. Call it “disruptive innovation for disruptive innovation.”

Bigger Budget = More Innovation and Creativity? Not so fast...

Michael Schrage of the Harvard Business Review on the Connection between budget and innovation.

When advising project teams frustrated by their seeming inability to deliver promised innovation or creativity to key customers, one provocative recommendation almost always produces positive results: Cut whatever's left of the budget by 15%. Innovate with that.

This seems to contradict all our preconceived notions. One might argue that the more funds you inject in R&D, the more innovation and creativity you will channel, but as Schrage adds:

Despite an embarrassing wealth of anecdotal data and econometric surveys, little positive correlation exists between R&D spend and successful innovation outcomes. That's why I can't help but laugh when mainstream business media whine that companies in this sector-and-that "don't spend enough on R&D."

Innovation and creativity are based far more on mental than bugetary efforts.

The point and purpose of the 15% provocation is to remind people that human capital always matters more than financial capital. Call it "disruptive innovation for disruptive innovation."

A team which can achieve better results with limited means (limited without becoming insufficient, far from it) will have a lot more chances to find forward-thinking solutions to existing issues.

Will Sencha democratise mobile development?

Web developers often get revved up by the introduction of new solutions that allow us to broaden the range of products that we can, well... develop. We get into an even bigger frenzy when the learning curve isn’t to steep.

Following the merger of various technologies (Ext JS + jQTouch + Raphaël), we now have access to a new tool (framework) that will no doubt connect with hordes of mobile development supporters. With the arrival of Sencha, hardcore fans and professionals alike will hold in their hands the power to create what most people consider to be...magic.

Combining HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript, Sencha gives us the ability to build robust and full-bodied environments that are compatible with the latest mobile environments (Blackberry, iPhone, Android).

To those of have always dreamed about it and still are, I present Sencha.

Oh! and the fact that it has just been funded to the tune of $14M or so will certainly help move this technology forward!

What I do know now is that when you are assessing someone’s ability to successfully innovate, it might be useful to stop and think about how they perceive the world. Are they able to see similarities in dissimilar things? Do the similarities make sense? Is the person assessing them able to tell the difference?

As John Hagel states in many different ways in his blog, we are about to enter a Great Shift in how our world works. It might be time to figure out how to define perceptual skills that could go easily unrecognized in the old economy, yet will be absolutely necessary for success in the new economy.
